The leading home automation company Nest has stopped selling its Nest protect smoke alarm, after testing has showed its wave away feature that allowed users to quickly turn off false alarms could be activated by mistake.

The high tech company Nest hit the headlines earlier in the year when they were purchased by internet giant Google for $3.2 billion. The Nest Protect fire alarm was to be their second product, following on from their successful automated thermostat

The announcement of the potential problem with their fire alarm was posted on Nest`s own blog, chief executive Tony Fadell posted: "We identified this problem ourselves and are not aware of any customers who have experienced this, but the fact that it could even potentially happen is extremely important to me and I want to address it immediately.

"We're enormously sorry for the inconvenience caused by this issue."

Nest Protect is able to be connected to the internet via your home internet, all installed Nest protects with an internet will have the feature disabled via a software update, while the feature is disabled Nest owners will have to use the button to turn off any false alarms, current owner will be offered a refund.

The problem was found by internal testing, and Tony Fadell stressed they had not received any complaints from owners of the Nest Protect.

Nest Protect will be looking at fixing the problem and Tony Faddell estimated it would take around two to three months to fix the problem.

The wave feature was a flagship feature of the product that was heavily advertised. Nest Protect went on sale late last year for the American market costing $129. This setback is an embarrassment for Google after spending such a substantial sum for the company.
