Baths


Roman baths where an important part of Roman society, back during Roman times most people used common bath house and having your own bath in your own villa was restricted to the wealthy roman. Heating a roman bath was done by using a furnace to heat the water which was pumped into the bath. Modern baths are much more common with most houses having a bath in them, they are much less opulent and smaller than there roman predecessors.

Mosaic Tiles


Looking back at the ancient roman villas you can see extravagant mosaic designs on their walls throughout the building, in today’s property you can continue to see ceramic tiles heavily used with mosaic patterns on floors and walls especially in your bathroom or kitchen. As with Roman villas not only do you see some beautiful mosaic patterns, coloured tiles can also be used to create images and pictures on your walls and filters.

Toilets


Many wealthy romans had indoor toilets that were in many cases even connected to a sewer system or cesspit this was then flushed down by buckets of water. Roman toilets were often located next to the kitchen and were also used as a waste disposal unit to get rid of kitchen waste.

Rooms in a Roman villa


Roman villas also have many types of room that are still used today, including a kitchen for food preparation, dining room for functions and dinner parties, a main entrance hallway, as well as individual bedrooms for the different members of the household. Many roman villas also had their own study/office were the head of the household could carry out their work.

Underfloor Heating


Underfloor heating is becoming increasingly popular, but this is not a new invention, underfloor heating was very popular in ancient roman villa`s called a hypocaust the floors were built with an air gap under the floor, the air was heated by a furnace and circulated.

Tiled Roofs

A popular option for roofing of Roman villas was made from terracotta or ceramic tiles.
